Albemarle's Downtown Churches

Built in 1908, First Lutheran was the first church in Albemarle to be constructed of brick. While the 1930 Christian Education Building [right] was torn down and replaced by a more modern structure in 1975, the sanctuary remains as an excellent example of Gothic Revival architecture.

Annunciation Catholic Church
416 North Second Street
Albemarle, North Carolina 28001

This photo shows the original 1934 church building, which was moved to Rock Creek Park in 1970 with the construction of a new church.

Albemarle, North Carolina 28001

Built in 1908, this Gothic Revival structure was the third sanctuary to be built by the Central United congregation on this site. Central United is now the largest Methodist Church in Stanly County.

First Baptist Church of Albemarle
202 North Second Street
Albemarle, North Carolina 28001

Along with Annunciation and First Lutheran, First Baptist is another of Albemarle's downtown churches. This 1904 photograph depicts the original wood-frame sanctuary -- also built in the Gothic revival style. The phot also depicts the Reverend Ralph H. Herring, who served as the congregation's sixth minister from 1901 to 1905.

Albemarle, North Carolina 28001

Constructed in 1924, this Beaux Arts brick sanctuary replaced the original 1900 Gothic Revival styled church. First Pres is the largest Presbyterian church in the county.

First Street United Methodist Church
509 North First Street
Albemarle, North Carolina 28001

This 1965 photograph depicts the second sanctuary to have been built at this location. This Gothic Revival structure was constructed in 1914.
