Besides Books
Audio and Video Cassettes.
We don't have many, but what we have is choice! Most of our videos are based on children's books: Harriet the Spy and The Stone Fox. We're beginning to order more non-fiction titles, such as School House Rock and I Can Go Potty. We are also buying more YA titles. Videos for teens are shelved in the adult collection.

Books on Tape.
Great for road trips. We have over 200 titles now. If you know of any titles you'd like us to purchase, just let us know! All are unabridged.

DVDs.
A new format that we are now adding into the collections!

Filmstrips.
From 9:00 to 5:00, Monday through Friday, you can pick a title from our list of filmstrips to watch on our filmstrip projector. We'll be glad to show you how to use the machine. After 5:00 and on weekends, you can choose from a selection of filmstrips kept at the Circulation Desk.

Read Along Kits.
These popular kits generally consist of a hanging plastic bag containing a paperback book and an audio cassette. We're building up our foreign language collections. We have several read-along kits in Spanish. We hope to have some titles in Hmong in the near future.

Magazines
Look at our magazines while visiting the library. Our titles include Sports Illustrated for Kids, Nintendo Power, Highlights and American Girl.

Computers

Computers just for Kids!

To access the Internet, you must show your Stanly County Public Library card to a staff member. You may use your parent's card if the parent is sitting with you.

INTERNET ACCESS FOR KIDS

In order for a child aged 8 through 17 to access the Internet without adult supervision, he/she must have his/her own library card, written parental consent, and take the library's Internet training class. Parental consent forms are generally available at all branches of the Stanly County Public Library. Once the parent's signature has been verified by a staff member, the child will need to sign up to take the library's Internet Training Class (about 10 minutes). The amount of time this class will take, depends on the expertise of the student, and how fast the Internet is working at that moment. Instructor will explain how to use browsers & search engines (if the child needs instruction), go over important safety issues, and explain the library's
Internet Policy and Guidelines for Computer Use. Once the class has been completed, the instructor will put a validation sticker on the child's library card and update the child's patron record.

CD-ROMS

Youth & Children's Services at the Main Library has a variety of educational CD-ROM games. Younger kids may want to try our Arthur, Barney or Magic School Bus CDs. Older kids may want to play Cluefinders or The Lost Mind of Dr. Brain.

For more information call Youth & Children's Services at (704) 986-3758.

Reading Lists

Reading Lists

Have you read everything by your favorite author, and don't know what to read next? Look at these lists for some ideas. Most of the lists have a wide range of reading levels. We've recently added some lists just for teens!

Adventure Books:
Read Alikes for My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George.

Most of these stories are about natural disasters, or survival against the elements. Some are about escaping kidnappers. All are exciting adventures. Best for 4th grade and up.

American Historical Fiction
Arranged in chronological order, the novels on this list are primarily for 4th graders or older. However, many of these stories would be fine read-alouds for the entire family. There are 9 time periods of American Historical Fiction to choose from.

Animal Stories:
Read Alikes for Charlotte's Web

Most of these are sweet, whimsical stories about communities of talking animals. Many would be great to read aloud to the entire family.

Realistic Animal Stories
This is a list of realistic animal stories similar to Where the Red Fern Grows. Most are 4th grade reading level or higher. Many would make fine family read alouds.

Boys and Their Shenanigans:
Read Alikes for The Great Brain

These books are about the adventures of some very mischievous boys. All of them are very funny. Many would be great read alouds for the entire family.

Fantasy
These are mostly high fantasies-- usually involving noble quests, sorcery, epic battles between good and evil with the fate of the universe (or least the kingdom) hanging in the balance. And yes, Harry Potter is is in this category.

Intrepid Heroines
These juvenile novels feature girls with gumption, guts and grit. Most of these stories are either hair-raising adventures or knock-you-out-of-your-chair funny! Most are best for 4th grade and up, although some would be great read alouds for the entire family.

Old-Fashioned Family Stories
Like the Laura Ingalls Wilder books, most of these stories are about the ups and downs of old-fashioned family life. Most are historical fiction. All of these are great for the entire family.

Orphans and Other Outsiders: Books similar to Anne of Green Gables
Most of these stories are about orphans and other children who are trying to find their place in other people's families. Most have an old-fashioned, nolstalgic appeal.

Young Adult Fiction: Asian and Asian-American Culture
This is a "mixed-bag" of stories that have something to do with Asian cultures. Some are set in the United States, others are set in countries such as Korea, China, or India. Some are historical fiction. These novels are generally not suitable or appealing for children under 12.

Young Adult Fiction: Chills and Thrills
These stories are chock full of chills, thrills, and suspense, with human villians. No evil vampires, demons or walking undead are in these stories.

Young Adult Fiction: Supernatural Tales of Horror and Suspense
Get ready to be really creeped out. These stories are definitely not for the faint of heart!
