Circulation
Our circulation department is usually the first area visited by patrons when entering the library. The staff provides customer support by issuing library cards, checking items in and out, reserving items, and renewing items.

Library Card.. The first step in your library journey will be the issuance of a library card. There is no charge for your first library card and you will need to have proof of current mailing address with you. This can be any form of ID with your mailing address or a piece of mail you've received with your name and address on it. Patrons can have no more than one valid card issued at any given time and children must be at least five years old to have their own library card. We encourage you to use your library card frequently but please remember that you are responsible for any items checked out on your card.

New patrons may also register for a library card via the
online catalog. Click on Patron Account and follow the click here to register now link. Your registration will be forwarded to the libary and you may pick up your library card at the branch specified during the registration process.

Reserving Items.. Patrons may place their own reserves on items by using either PowerPAC or the Online Public Access Terminals in the libraries. All you need is a PIN number that can be assigned by the circulation staff. If you have trouble placing reserves, a staff member can assist you. Reserves can also be placed for you by the circulation staff, if you prefer. A staff member will contact you when your reserved item or items come in. Once you are contacted, the items must be picked up within three business days.

Renewing Items.. Items may be renewed by telephone or in person at the library. As long as no reserves exist, you may renew your items up to three times before they must be returned. Have your library card available when renewing items by telephone. Please note that videos cannot be renewed.

Fine and Fee Schedule.. Most materials can be checked out for 21 days, and a fine will be charged for those items turned in late. The amount of fines charged and any fees for library services are listed below.

Information (Reference)
The reference staff can help you find information on a variety of topics. Our collection of research materials covers a wide range of subjects and includes encyclopedias, dictionaries, atlases, almanacs, business resources, telephone and zip cope directories, periodical and bibliographic indexes, magazines and newspapers, and much more. Another important service provided by the reference staff is Interlibrary Loan.

ILL (Interlibrary Loan).. ILL is a way for our patrons to borrow books that the library does not own. We can borrow from any library in the United States that will lend us the material. ILL service is available at the Reference Desk in the Main Library and is available to anyone with a valid SCPL library card. Beginning July 1, 2002 there will be a $2.00 fee for each item requested through interlibrary loan. For more details, talk to our reference staff at 704-986-3759.
